Re: Trip to Canyonlands/Moab

I was thinking of Zion but am still in the air. Timing sounds right. The wife needs something less intense but good views :)

Re: w460 brake issue diagnosis help (again)

The rear compensator is a valve that restricts braking pressure to the rear wheels. The more heavily loaded you are (shorter distance between the body & axle), the more pressure is allowed. This distance will also vary over rough terrain and hard braking as the body pitches around. When on rough...

Re: Rear shock mount busted

This is a very common problem. The fix is to weld on a new shock mount, which is available at Eurotruck or Mike S. or the dealer. Obviously, the rust and general area needs to be thoroughly stripped clean of rust and debris, paint etc. The new mount should be welded on with a good MIG or even better...

Re: engine oil..

The discounted oil I got was sold under the Napa brand, which means it's Valvoline. I don't really believe it makes much difference as long as you use a decent 100% synthetic. They just don't burn at the same temperature as conventional oil. On the subject of diesels and oil color: I used to have a ...

Re: engine oil..

The Mercedes diesels will always have black oil, especially the older ones. Carbon gets into the oil after combustion and that's just the way it is. One interesting note: I got a screaming deal on some synthetic, which I'd previously dismissed as a waste for an old 617a, and tried it out. To my amaz...
