The slotted gold parts in the picture need to be able to turn freely. If they can't turn, then the system won't adjust at all, nevermingd self-adjusting.

Yes, replace with plastic or rubber. I took the opportunity to add a large coarse filter near the rear axle.

For MB wiring, brown is always ground. That looks like original MB wiring too.

I'll say it again: Lowering the opening temperature does nothing for preventing overheating. The thermostat can only open so far. After that point it has no impact and other limits come into play.

18K miles in 11 years? On one vehicle, sure.
On many vehicles that follow the same export/import path. No way that passes the test.

Use a thermal imaging camera to watch the radiator as the engine goes past 80C. The radiator should get hot at the intake and, but be roughly [thermostat temperature] at the exit end.
