Re: Restoration Project: 1986 300GD LWB Kastenwagen

Final Decision: I'm going for the 5 speed swap with my nonturbo OM617 :D My choice on 5 speeds is for the 711.113 iron box transmission (same size and gearing as transmission 711.117 G box), I'm not fond of the 717.420 Getrag 5 speeds. If you now have the iron box 4 speed, you can put the 8 hole ou...

Re: Restoration Project: 1986 300GD LWB Kastenwagen

the 5-speed isn't an easy thing to take on and won't do what you may think it will. Certainly not if you have the standard engine in there and larger than stock tires. An overdrive 5 speed only makes sense if you have the engine power to run that long gear ratio. First do some calculations with tir...

Re: 461 Dash Cluster to 460 Retrofit - Progress (kind of)

So for those interested in converting to the newer cluster but are getting stuck at the CANBUS to analog 12V signal, I can help. But I need some help first. My friend is an electrical engineer and programmer. If he can get the information on how the 461 cluster receives and processes data, he can m...

Re: Side exhaust on 460

When calculating total gas flow resistance of an exhaust system, a 90 degree bend equals to a certain length of straight pipe (1 or 1,5 meters or something, don't know anymore) Count all the bends, and that translates to a resistance of certain length of straight pipe. When looking at the original M...

Re: Side exhaust on 460

I'm not in love with having my exhaust pipe running over my (now plastic) fuel tank - especially with the approaching plan to swap it all out with 3". Oh well, originally it runs over the plastic tank as well (with a heat shield that is). And why need a 3" exhaust? That's pretty hefty, wh...

Re: Side exhaust on 460

A friend of mine had a side exhaust too. Two downsides of such a sidepipe: - your rear wheel will become sooty and black - when driving with the rear windows open and standing in traffic, you will smell diesel exhaust coming up through the side window under certain conditions. He's now gone back to ...
