“A 100% REPLICA OF JACKY ICKX’S CAR”
Jorg Sand first started covering the Dakar as a journalist in 2002 and reckons that since then he’s been on 16 editions. And he’s about to chalk up another, but this time as a competitor in his beloved Jack Ickx Mercedes G-Wagon replica that he built back in 2007 when he could never have imagined it would actually turn a wheel in anger on a Dakar! Before the car gets loaded onto the boat in Marseille it will be making a stop over in Brussels for a tribute show to celebrate Ickx’s 75th birthday and will take pride of place among the Belgian star’s Formula 1 and Le Mans cars. Needless to say Jorg will be looking to replicate the result Jacky Ickx and Claude Brasseur achieved in the famous car No 142 back in ‘83! Co-driving the G-Wagon will be Jorg’s friend Bastian Klausing and it is highly likely it won’t be the duo’s last appearance on the Dakar Classic, as together they have bought two classic Mercedes trucks to provide service to other Dakar competitors. The trucks are still being prepared and won’t be ready until next year but given their intimate knowledge of the venerable G-Wagon it is highly likely that these vehicles will form the backbone of their customer base.
“I built the car with the help of the mechanics who worked on the original, Mercedes and of course Jack Ickx himself who provided invaluable input. In total it took over a year’s research to produce a car that is a 100% replica of the car Jacky raced. The replica was built in 1982, the same year of manufacture as the original and the engine and chassis numbers are only slightly different. We will be taking it out of the Mercedes museum, where it has been on loan, for the occasion.”
