This is true. If you can get hold of E190 16v 'dog-leg' shifter, it is almost same as iron box G one. Only difference is one lever: reverse and first gear/ 'L' as it is marked on Wolf. Lever part code A4602600437, most expensive part in this whole shifter.

Yeah, but those shifters are about $1K in the US... if you can find one. You're absolutely correct though.

Reverse is in the wrong position... try it, but I'm not optimistic

I got a 4 speed shifter from eBay and after I pulled it apart I could see that on the vertical housing for the shift lever there is a section about an inch from the bottom where the housing was cut twice twice horizontally and the remaining piece was pushed in. This pushed in piece keeps the shift lever from engaging reverse unless it is pulled up. When it is pulled up the thicker ring section of the shift lever shaft is above that pushed in piece and you are no longer locked out. So I cut that pushed in piece out and viola, no more interlock to get to first gear when using it as a 5 speed. Drawback is that if I'm sloppy in my shifting from 1st to 2nd I could hit reverse.
I'll post pictures later
