I m not sure this spring is responsible for the pedal return action? It doesn’t make sense to me.

That spring controls the diaphram inside

exactly my point, so how is this at all affecting pedal return - unless its broken and stuck in position once depressed? maybe

Thats correct. From what he describes the booster should not be the problem, as it has nothing to do with pedal travel.

this as explained to me. It makes sense in my head as the little spring attached to the pedal assembly is not large enough to force the booster to rebound.

the booster's plunger (shown in pic) rebound, and in turn the pedal, is enabled by the internal spring of the booster. We shall see.

I would still doublecheck the spring that’s attached to the pedal I don’t see how the very low spring rate of the ‘inside the booster’ spring would affect pedal movement. I still vote for the master.

...just a further diagnosis idea, if the truck is still together and drivable, that is. I would like to check whether one of the brakes is heating up more than the rest.

Drive around, trigger the fault, check with IR thermometer. If one is significantly off, you have a new worry vector to pursue.

Normally, the hydraulic pressure will push the pedal back most of the way. Vacuum is pulling against the booster spring. I'm wondering if there is a hydraulic failure. Bleeding brakes is cheap, and a good first step.

I'm admittedly still learning this stuff. googling around this helped me more understand: http://www.agcoauto.com/content/news/p2_articleid/129

I've got the booster and several meters of vacuum tubing on order. Hopefully this solves it but I won't be totally surprised if I'm chasing it post install....master cylinder, caliper release issues.
