G500 Shock mounts

As most of you know I am still on the hunt for a G500. I came across one about 7 hours away and it looks great! 2003, 3 owners, has a good maintenance history, No accidents. It’s Grey on Grey, 130k miles listed for 27k. Lockers are supposedly operational as well. It did spend several years of its life on the east coast and the only negative i can find is the shock mounts appear to have some corrosion.

I’m no expert on rust so does this look like surface rust that could be sanded or ground down or does this look like a serious issue? There is no rust on the body, the frame, or axles from what I can see, it’s just those shock mounts and partially the springs. I ideally don’t want a vehicle that I’m going to have to always fight rust on, but if this looks like something that could be taken care of on a Saturday or two, that doesn’t scare me. What are your thoughts? Should I even consider this one? Thank you again everyone for your insights!

Looks treatable to me, but rust is insidious. If you take this on, treat quickly & be thorough. It may be wise to spray some fluidfilm around when you're done.

Thanks Vadim! If you were to take something like this on what would be your plan of action? I have heard good things about fluid film. What about other undercoatings like rubberized undercoatings or paints?

From doing a little reading it looks like products that use cosmoline are pretty good. Anyone else have any products they recommend?

The primary action should be stopping rust and sealing it off with POR15 or something similar. The fluid film is to seep into the nooks and crannies that you don't see or can't reach. There are lots of wax like coatings that can be used here

Yes, overall not too bad. Clean and repaint the surface rust and spray some inhibitor up into the cavity of the shock mount. They rust from the inside as well.

So I have decided I will definitely NOT be purchasing this one. I had a ppi done and the engine idles and drives rough, oil was very low and leaking all over (especially bad considering it was supposedly changed last month) Trans fluid bad, tcase leaking all over. Diffs were not operational, bad cv axle and some cosmetic issues that were also not noted. So I am running as fast as I can in the other direction. Poor thing must have been neglected pretty bad.

Back on the hunt!

Thanks again for all the help!

Sorry to hear that. It’s hard to stay patient but it’s worth it in the long run. You’ll find one sooner or later.

Way to be patient. It is difficult but worth it in the long run. Well done.
