Top speed w461 w/ 617.952 and 711.113?

Hey yall, i got 12lb boost and rebuilt motor. Was creeping from 70 to about 80 in open top 240gd. I think the wind resistance becomes limiting at higher speeds, what kind of speed have yall seen open and closed top G wagons with 617a and the overdrive iron 5?

Closed top SWB with 617a & 35" tires got me to 77 MPH or so... but it took forever to get there. That was with a 4-speed. If you can hit 80 with a 617a then you're at the head of the pack I think. That 5-speed is the only way to get there.

617a and 711.13 with 4.88 difs, 235/85-16 tires, 110kmh comfortably all day long, 120 no problem but noisy and uncomfortable, 130kmh possible but on really good and flat stretch of road, extremely dangerous if you hit a bump, pothole or on rutted roads...

On my 602A 300GD with 265/70/16 (31") , 120 KPM . Remember you will loose 3% of torque per inch increased starting with with 29" factory tires.110 kpm is the top of the confort zone.

OM617A engine, 711.100 low gear iron box, 5,33 axles, 35” MT tires.

Keeping around 90 km/h (55 mph) was normal, it got noisy afterwards but vehicle happily cruised till 110 (70). Not a choice for long commutes.

Max I got out was something over 130 (80). And once had a drive over hundred kilometers keeping speed above 120 (75). On that haste, best description I can think of, the vehicle became floaty, had to focus all attention on driving and make no sudden moves. But I have experienced same on other vehicles with lift and big tires, after all it is above recommended speed limit for many mud tires.

Another notice that on high speeds the fuel consumption shoots up. While my daily in city was 13-14l/100km (18-16 MPG), doing that 120 km/h run, +4000 RPM got engine to burn diesel on rate over 22l/100km (10 MPG).

I entertained idea of getting 711.117 overdrive transmission to lower highway RPM, but my current view is that is not worth without more powerful engine than stock OM617A – on lower RPM engine makes less power, and that engine has pretty steep power curve - by some calculators I used it drops pretty near to power what is needed to push this brick through air.

OM 617 N/A with 31.75” MT tyres and 4-speed manual (1:1 4th). Cruising comfortably around 80-85 km/h. Prefer driving it slower around 75-80 km/h.

Haven’t tried to top it out but have driven around 105-110 km/h on the highway wich isn’t funny with mud tyres. Even though the Cooper STT Pro are rated for 160 km/h.

Good info thanks guys, using this as a proxy for the health of my rebuilt engine esp after overheat in first 100 miles lost coolant. Forgot to mention on 33in tires, 255 85 r16. Love the ground clearance but definitely feel the torque loss compared to stock. 110 feels like best cruise speed.

On my mini-treffen down to CLT to catch a flight for the real treffen, I looked down at my Waze ap and was surprised to see this:

I took this picture to show at the Treffen because I didn’t think anyone would believe me :D This was flat and and busy interstate... I was simply trying to merge/keep up to not miss several exits to the airport.

W460 cabrio with super duper heavy hard top on, lead-lined rear bench seat in, 4:88 diffs, 35” tires 617a with superpump, stock Garret turbo, stock 460 radiator, no intercooler (yet), Ironbox 5-speed. Temps were just above half and it was in the 70’s IIRC.

My truck has always run great on the highway with this configuration up to about 69... then I would sometimes get a weird oscillation in the cab and start to feel like I was time traveling. After recent tweaks to my hard top or with my new soft top I can run, well, 84 and it just goes without any drama other than a little shimmy in the steering wheels due to 35 KO2’s. I then start to worry about brakes with 35’s, handling, reaction times etc. in my 460 at that speed.

I’ve always found my 460 “at home” on back roads or highways between 55 and 65 MPH. 70 on the interstate is ok. Anything past that and you’re really paying attention... or at least you should be.

Very accurate description of my identical setup.
