mounting a spare petrol can to the spare tire holder

I don't like carrying petrol containers inside a vehicle and while I know that a roll or being rear ended by a vehicle with a high front end (like a lifted truck) could cause a fireball too, I've been looking at my standard Cabrio (with tailgate) spare tire holder as a possible mounting place.
My main concern is how much weight that mount can tolerate over bumpy, washboard roads. I'll have the spare mounted in front of it so there is a leverage issue too.
I'd be mounting a NATO can with 20l of petrol so that would be an additional 45-55 pounds with the mount and the can itself.
Has anyone tried this?

Thanks Fernando - I wish I lived in Europe for this and other reasons but it hard to find and very pricy here in US.
Samba (?) for VW maybe what we see in US if we are lucky.
