While you are waiting for the blowers.... how about cleaning up the motor mounting bracket. Can't believe you even let it touch your new motor. :D

Mark you know better than that. This bracket is being "reinforced" then PNZWGN'd to match everything else.

Guys I'm having a hard time finding a place to purchase the thermostat. A0038209610 All of the places I've sourced parts from in the past show this as a seat switch.

I've looked hard and can only find one correct web hit outside of Russia (no offense to our Russian friends.) I've looked everywhere and tried multiple queries. Am I missing something here? Is there another part number I should/could be using?

I'm looking for this guy I think:

Will need the knob and whatever secures it also.

Also.... using this helpful link from Alan https://mercedes.7zap.com/en/eu/fg/suv/ ... 30/0/0/#60 I've secured the following:

-150 seal ring
-160 seal ring
-50 expansion valve
-140 (already have and in good shape)

My question is... how important is item 60/seal/A 463 835 04 98..? Is this the black foamy stuff that wraps around the thermostat line? If so I already had this. If anyone knows please let confirm.

I'm also trying to figure out what holds the expansion valve in place?

Lastly, I can source 260/resistor/A 124 821 00 60 but I'd like to have the matching plug end to go with it. Then I should be able to fabricate a wiring harness to the blower motor/fan switch. Make sense? Would anyone be able to provide a part number for that plug? Thank you!

Unit what was in my shell is same as on your pictures, early one from 1989, so actually it does not have 463 code on yet, only 460 one, very new ones have also W461 codes. It has internal fan resistor but I will go with external; I cut hole to air intake wall as W463 A/C subsequent install manual directed, I have posted those files in this forum but I can do it again if needed. Resistor itself is common from W124, part A1248210760. If it goes bad, you don’t have to remove whole dash for this.

Ed I just read over this again... what if I just reuse the existing resistor that I have in my non-AC heater box? I just replaced it a few years ago. If I could secure the resistor properly in the new box then I could "bench test" this resistor and fan switch with the new blower motor I sourced to make sure it worked fine. I understand the compromise would be having to pull out the dash to change it again but it would keep my from having to cut further holes and such. And save a few bucks... thoughts? Hell it takes me no time to pull the dash out of this thing at this point.

It is my contention that any three speed resistor wired between the fan switch and the fan will modulate the fan's speed. That is all they do.
Many vehicles have their resistor in an easy access area just under the dash but often attached to the blower housing.
As long as wired properly they should be able to be mounted wherever is convenient.
Make, model and voltage intensity may differ some but the fan motor will react to them all.

I'm sure the resistor could be re-used is placed properly in the path of moving air to cool it. You could also use a fully variable motor speed controller and get rid of the troublesome resistors all together. More efficient and less prone to overheating the connections.

A0038209610 is the right part for W463 original setup. And current W461 setup. Not used on any other vehicle. I think the only option for this is Mercedes dealership or long waiting game (I got mine, new, from German ebay). I would not go for used part - once the capillary tube brakes, the part is kaput.

Code: Select all

Part info: A0038209610
Ranco K57 H7000/001
93-30-1L (I have seen those numbers varying, I think it is date related)
70.910.02.129
                     NIA    FLA    LRA    VAC
3-6    6(6)/250~   |    6    6    36    250
3-6    6(6)/250~   |    6    6    36    250

Original W460 setup used different thermostats.
I have some pictures of one on sale long time ago, I don’t know the part code.
Ranco A57-H0105, 90.613.04.419 but this returns nothing on Google.

Knob for original W460 is A0008350392 and plate A4606893908 or A4616891208.

The addon Diavia A/C system for W460 also had Rancho thermostats but I have no good images on them or other info. It is hard to interpret is it part 87, 171 etc...
http://mb-teilekatalog.info/view_SubGro ... subgrp=001

I myself was considering just using similar suitable Rancos K-series thermostat. What this piece ultimately does is just measures temperature on pipe near expansion valve and switches system on and off. I read that on vehicles it should not allow to go below temperature point where evaporator freezes, but any A/C engineer can correct me if this idea is wrong. So, the fridge part might not be good, also those have often very long tubes.

If you have some good A/C shop near who installs systems to campers and RV-s they might have a suitable replacement. For reference, a Diavia list, I think those are automotive compatible: http://www.diavia.it/eng_spares.php?categoria=47

Yes, A4638350498 is just a piece of thick black foam cut half and expansion valve and pipes section carved out. I think it is just for protection for touching cold piece, or condensation forming to drip down.

For your system without nuts on evaporator pipes, there should be a metal backing plate what bolts to expansion valve and holds pipes in place, it usually comes with evaporator.

If the resistor works and you are good with solution then go for it. By no means is what Mercedes did always a superior solution. By part code it is clear that they just took a W124 piece and rolled with it. I myself just do not trust the old one I have, it will sure die on cold winter day…

My source says A0038209610 is available at $180 minus whatever discount a particular dealer decides to give you.
