A0038209610 is the right part for W463 original setup. And current W461 setup. Not used on any other vehicle. I think the only option for this is Mercedes dealership or long waiting game (I got mine, new, from German ebay). I would not go for used part - once the capillary tube brakes, the part is kaput.

Original W460 setup used different thermostats.
I have some pictures of one on sale long time ago, I don’t know the part code.
Ranco A57-H0105, 90.613.04.419 but this returns nothing on Google.
Knob for original W460 is A0008350392 and plate A4606893908 or A4616891208.
http://mb-teilekatalog.info/view_SubGro ... subgrp=150The addon Diavia A/C system for W460 also had Rancho thermostats but I have no good images on them or other info. It is hard to interpret is it part 87, 171 etc...
http://mb-teilekatalog.info/view_SubGro ... subgrp=001I myself was considering just using similar suitable Rancos K-series thermostat. What this piece ultimately does is just measures temperature on pipe near expansion valve and switches system on and off. I read that on vehicles it should not allow to go below temperature point where evaporator freezes, but any A/C engineer can correct me if this idea is wrong. So, the fridge part might not be good, also those have often very long tubes.
If you have some good A/C shop near who installs systems to campers and RV-s they might have a suitable replacement. For reference, a Diavia list, I think those are automotive compatible:
http://www.diavia.it/eng_spares.php?categoria=47Yes, A4638350498 is just a piece of thick black foam cut half and expansion valve and pipes section carved out. I think it is just for protection for touching cold piece, or condensation forming to drip down.
For your system without nuts on evaporator pipes, there should be a metal backing plate what bolts to expansion valve and holds pipes in place, it usually comes with evaporator.
If the resistor works and you are good with solution then go for it. By no means is what Mercedes did always a superior solution. By part code it is clear that they just took a W124 piece and rolled with it. I myself just do not trust the old one I have, it will sure die on cold winter day…
