ok (no slop or chunckieness) on the old shaft they were considerably looser than the new DS, which I could hardly move by hand.

I do still have the gear noise. I’m wondering if it’s the backlash in the front diff?

I had a w124 that made a similar sound from the transmission fluid and filter being clogged up. I checked the fluid and it looked reasonable but I think I might change it along with the pressure plate as a preventative maintenance item.

Thoughts?

That’s fantastic news! More evidence that against rebuilt gwagen driveshafts isn’t.

Chris was very confident in the backlash setting. But maybe the bad DS could damage the pinion bearing quickly enough to alter the backlash?

Do you mean changing the conductor plate?

Yeah, I’m super excited and yes, conductor plate. Seems unlikely that the DS would effect the pinion bearing that quickly since the whine was there immediately after reinstallation at Wolfgang’s.

Backlash can be easily determined by twisting the pinion flange with tcase in neutral, it’s hard to describe in words what excessive backlash feels like, but you can use the rear axle as reference, it should show a lot more backlash than front, not less.

I will take a look tonight. I suppose this would be measured in degrees of rotational movement?

Ok. I checked at lunch and the front moves probably twice as much as the rear. I took two videos but I can’t figure out how to attach them? Says mov is an invalid extension

Yikes! It was within spec for new bearings when Wolfgang’s installed it a few years ago, I wonder what happened to it since then- is there any signs of metal flakes/metallic glitter in the diff oil?

I believe we can only download photos to this board, gotta use a video hosting site.

Here is a vid I took just before shipping the axle to Wolfgang’s.

Chris, what are your thoughts on the two videos I posted?

They are about the same as I’m seeing on my near 200k mile g500.

Any metal flake visible in front diff oil?
