Om606a 6 Speed Manual Swap ???

I am interested in swapping an om606 turbo into my 280g lwb. I want to swap the transmission with a 6 speed manual from a diesel benz from Europe and have found some from the sprinters, vitos, clk and c classes. My question is, does anyone know which 6 speed would be easiest to bolt up to the om606 or which one would hold up to the most torque? I am new to the G wagen ( just purchased about a month ago and is yet to be delivered), any help/ pictures would be appreciated.

Please let me know. Pictures would be great or anyone that has done the swap .

Thanks

Tony

You are opening a big project! The best of luck to you - a few people here, including myself, are in the process of doing a similar swap so stay tuned. Personally, I have no information about the 6-speed to offer.

Anyone?

Find a 6 speed that was from a 270cdi or 290 turbodiesel e class or Van, these are the strongest ones.

Do you have any pictures from your swap ? Thanks for the information chris. I checked the engines and both are a 5 cylinder ? A 6 speed would bolt up from these engines to a 6 cylinder om606 ?? Do any modifications need to be done or is it bolt on ?
Also, do you have any information on the transmissions. I was looking at others such as the 716.651
Thanks

The 6 speed 617.6xx bolts directly. You will need to get the shifter rod, as it is quite different from the 5 speed gearboxes. It will need shortening.
The one from the passenger car and sprinter van have different mounting but that's not a big issue. Vito gearbox is not an option.
Have in mind that it has only one overdrive - 6th (0.8) and the 1st speed is 4.5 or 5.1 - depending on your tyres and differentials it can be impractical for daily driving.

On this board there where a lot on good threads about 6 speed gearboxes, some mated to 662 and others to 606. It looks like they lost a lot of value, when half of the posts somehow got erased. Do a search thru what Axel606 and Sprinter711651 has to say on the subject.

I have a 6 speed box mated to a 662 engine (5 cyl old style turbo tractor) that one will fit a 606 as well.
711.651 rated to 370nm

Very low 1st gear. 5.014, so in everyday driving you start in 2nd. Overdrive in 6th is 0.828.
Finding the right gearing for your intended use of the vehicle and the availeble engine power / torque is the key to a happy converted G life. Some have found that with the power of a 606 engine, they where most happy with 4.4 or 4.1 diff ratio, instead of the more common 4.9.

Hi Gpancer.

I don't have 6speed gearbox in my G. I didn't take it when I did the swap, becouse of hight price before some years, and it was not possible to find them. Very rare here, everybody drive automatic. Now it is not anymore interested to me.

So I find diff gears 44:10 (4.4), and put manual gearbox from e-calss 290td. With tires 265/60/18 I have almost equal setup as original 300td. Very small differences in speed.
Pump was at local Bosch service and they did the elements swap, and mount it again in G.

For now without any problems, easy to drive for daily driving.

2.9TD has 300 Nm
3.0TD has 330 Nm
I think this 30Nm won't make any problem to manual gearbox.
Maye gearbox is rated to 300Nm but also it has safety factor.

This 6 speed therefor also doesn't give you much more gearing wise than a 5sp gearbox. Only more gears between 1st and 5th. Not worth the hassle I'd say.

The 6 speed tranny's which doesn't bolt up, have an overdrive in 5th and 6th and may be nice for highway driving. You'll need an adapterplate to make it fit. Don't know how you'd end up with the shortshaft to the transfer case.

Gear ratios for 716.6xx

It is not made for max speed, but for smoother gear change, compared to the 5 speed box
