What transmission do I need?

Hey all! My name is thijs, and I'm planning on a build with an om606, and I had some questions, first and foremost, there are 4 versions, which one do you recommend? second, what is the MPG on these vehicles? and third, which (manual) transmissions bolt up to the om606?

Thanks loads!

Thijs

Welcome.

There is a lot of information here in this link on engine swaps.

OM606.96x is the turbo version. Any will work, provided you have the G oil pan/pump/engine mount arms. You'll need a cable throttle (custom cables are soon-to-be offered here) and special short drive shaft. Don't forget the 250GD Wolf fan shroud and probably custom oil cooler lines. Installing an intercooler is a hair-losing experience.

Transmissions: 711.113 or 711.117 for iron-box 5-speed w/overdrive (need appropriate bell housing). 722.42x for overdrive Getrag 5-speed as in W463,W124,W201. 4-speed iron boxes will work too, and I think the 6-speed aluminum gearbox can work with enough modification. No real benefit other than rowing through an extra gear change, from what I can tell.

So I take it there is no holy grail 6-speed with both a granny and overdrive, right?

Does that transmission fit to an om606 directly?

Transmissions that are fitted to cdi engines have a different bolt pattern than the om60x range engines, adapterplates are required then (which I haven't seen yet).

To my knowledge, the 6-speeds which do bolt up, don't have a wider spread gear pattern than the 5-speeds, only give you an extra gear in between.

Sure, there are plenty of options of 6 speed boxes, that will bolt up to 601 thru 606. No modifications required of the boltpattern, just match the right flywheel and off you go.
It's the mounting in the vehicle, that will need to be modded.

711.651 version found in both Sprinter and ordinary car range, has these ratios.

1st 5.014
2nd 2.831
3rd 1.789
4th 1.256
5th 1.0
6th 0.828

There are various ways that you can use the extra gear.
If you want a comfortable cruiser. Change your diffs to 4.4, 4.1 or even 3.72
Enjoy a normal 1st gear and benefit from the closer ratios in 4-5-6 as your engine will feel the changed end-gearing.

If like me, you have a modest 120 hp engine, keep the diffs at 4.9 and enjoy the added possiblities of a granny 1st. Normal driving is done in 2-6.
Mine is a adventure touring vehicle, where the low 1st is icing on the cake. You don't NEED it, but very nice when it's there :-)

Good Day Forum, I have searched the forum for a solution to my problem but yet to pin point a fix. Briefly, I have a 463.282 & made a engine swap to a M104 engine and installed a 722.6 with Ole management & a 6 Bolt Flange (A4632720245) tranny output flange mated to a 8 Bolt transfer case flange. Shortened the prop (to 11 inches) which was not properly done resulting in a bad vibration at 80+ KPH. On inspection found the U Joint having a slight movement in the Yoke damaging same. My original shaft is A4604101418, I need a front portion of the spline prop with a 6 bolt flange to fix my problem if this part exists. Failing this, I need your guidance for a prudent solution. Thanks in advance, Marc Jamaica
