Some technical mods happening on the Kasten at the moment. The truck will be fitted with a 463 radiator. In order to address oil cooling, I've fitted the oil to water heat exchanger found on other MB vehicles, this particular one came off an E290 TD sedan. It's a relatively straight forward swap, a few things need moving around/changing.

The G has an OM662 (2.9 TD) which had the common oil cooler next to old radiator. These coolers won't fit along side the new radiator. The cylinder head fitting needs to changed, this is where the water exits into the fuel heater then to the heater. A new fitting was relocated at mddle of cylinder head behind injector pump, this will now be connected to the heater plumbing. One frost plug needs to be removed immediately to rear of injector pump, this is where the bottom connection of oil cooler enters.

This engine now has a Diesel Mieken 6mm mechanical pump. Some pumps are different lengths, this one was 11mm longer at the rear support. Some of the supports are made accordingly, so you can either swap them, or in this case I added a spacer with thick washer as it must spread load on the back of alloy support at injector pump.

A great solution for the OM602/662 engine! Do away the messy hoses and cooler.
I wonder if it will fit OM603/OM606 set up w/ the water routing on the valve head and the engine freeze plug. And enough to cool that extra cyl?

Would be nice to tap into the oil connectors to allow external cooler hookup.

Yes will fit all those engines, it's standard on 605s, just slightly different cylinder head connection.

Great write up Scott. Thanks for taking the time to explain it and provide the part #s. Looks like an excellent solution.

Welldone , nice engine OM662 , modern .Very interesting option with water cooling oil filter.
I will try 3 core radiator and air oil cooler with big water pump and small pulley.
Lets see.
