1994 G320 Speedometer Stopped working

The speedometer on my 1994 G320 recently stopped working. I've had this happen once before when I blew a fuse. This time I checked all of the fuses and they are all good. Suspecting the worst, I shipped it off to Palo Alto Speedometer where they gave it their refurb, bench tested it and shipped it back. It still doesn't work.

What's odd is that the cruise control works and the ABS system seems happen. Does the cruise control use the vehicle's speed sensor, or the ABS sensors? I thought the single wire coming off the speedo head was what drove the cruise control, but maybe not.

If not, it could be the speed sensor. Four By Four club and Eurotruck don't list them on their websites, but could probably get me one if I called. I don't suppose I'm lucky enough that the speed sensor interchanges with some US-Spec car am I?

Thanks,
Tad

I assume your G has VIN less than 106xxx...which gets signal from hall sensor at transfer case. Those VIN over 106xxx get signal from front left ABS sensor.

Have you checked the speed/hall sensor connection at the transfer case ? Check for wire and connection integrity. Maybe just unplugging and cleaning connection may fix your problem.

There are 3 wires in that are in that plug, one being ground. The other two send signal to diagnostics, stoplamps switching, center difflock solenoid, instrument cluster,tachometer....not sure which wires complete which circuits but all seem to be part of FUSE 10 circuit.

Let us know what you find.

Thanks!

WDB46323117096899 so yes before 106xxx. I checked fuse 10 - it's good. With it removed the other gauges don't work either. I checked the connector at the t-case and the terminals are as clean as new. It has 13.5V on one of the three terminals with it running, which is what I expected. I removed the speed sensor and the drive in the t-case doesn't spin - a good indication to me that the gears and angle-drive aren't stripped.

With EPC now requiring a subscription again, does anyone know the part number for the speed sensor?

Thanks! I've ordered one. The plug on my speedometer doesn't look like the one in the photo, but the speed sensor looks correct. We shall see!

Now it is time to trace the wiring. I replaced the speed sensor and the speedometer is still not working.

Update: I finally found the problem. The plastic drive gear inside the 463-281-02-30 housing has stripped. Does anyone know if that housing includes the shaft and drive gear? The shaft is quite stiff inside the housing, which I'm sure is the reason the plastic gear stripped.
