Early 463 Rotary light switch replacement

My rotary light switch began moving too freely and not clicking from one setting to the next so it was time to replace it. The earlier 460 model has an all in one unit that at its base has small set screws that crimp in the appropriate wire for that particular light. and a plastic guard that covers them when you are done.

The one I am replacing on the early 463 separates from its base like a plug allowing you to remove the part that wears out and just plug in a new outer rotary unit into the base. Saving you from having to do all the little screws for each wire. This could probably be retrofitted to the older 460s but how often do you really replace one of these.
To access the switch you first remove the vent below it (2 clips on top of the vent) pull it out.
Then pull the knob off the switch, Loosen and remove the large nut. Rotate the unit a bit as it has 2 metal fingers that hold it to the mounting plate. Then fish the unit out through the vent opening.
Unplug the base from the rotary switch part, plug in the new unit and reinstall. I picked up a lightly used 190E switch from the Pick-in-pull which is the same. Have a look at the pics. Hope it helps.

Is there a way we can order the entire switch (or a cross reference alternative) new from MB still? I ran a search on a part number in a dealer catalog to no avail.

Post a photo of what your switch looks like. Just that part of the dash showing it and its surroundings. there has got to be a comparable E or C-class that is the same switch.

Has anyone had luck verifying the C or E class equivalent part? My lights won’t turn on and I have to drive early tomorrow morning. I’m considering pulling a switch out of a C class at a junkyard today. I’ll assume 0005456004 will work?

Found an old c class that just made it to the local pick n pull. I’ll pull the headlamp switch and see if it fits. 0005456004

The 80s W123 cars had the same rotary switch. Head to the pick and pull.

I replaced the light switch in my W460 with a W123 switch from Pelican Parts and it works fine.

Guys, I ended up buying a new part, but I was at least pleased I found it delivered to my local autozone. Part no 0005456004 is available for about $110, non- MB part. The part looks identical to the MB part. Pick n pull would have been cheaper, but I ran out of time. The next time I'm a the junk yard I'll pull an extra one.

The only thing that was tricky in replacing the switch was the amount of pressure it took to get the knob pulled off. I used some rags and big set of pliers...probably took 50lbs of pull to get the thing off...really made me nervous I would crush the knob. All worked out though.

New switch has a very satisfying crispness and operates the various lighting settings perfectly.
