pre-MBUSA W463 Speakers

One of the dash tweeters on my factory original 1996 W463 speakers has become intermittent. This is part A4638200002, which points up at each end of the dash. Replacement is an option at EUR40. However, I'm guessing that the other speakers are not that far behind.

Pop quiz:
- What replacements have you installed?
- How happy are you with the result?

I guess I should also ask if someone has a working used tweeter that they are willing to part with.

Update on speaker sizes:

Dashboard tweeter:
- A4638200002
- 4ohm,
- 62mm diameter, snug fit into hole, could be enlarged.
- two mounting screws, 82mm / 3.25" apart
Front footwell midrange:
- A0008209902
- 4ohm,
- 96mm / 3.75" hole in the inner body
- four mounting screws, 88mm square pattern
- about 90mm of depth available,
- cannot stick out much due to interference with rubber mats

Did you check Blaupunkt? They use to be well involved in the 90's car industry at least on VW's ... Philips was also fitted ...

MB OEM is still available, I ordered new wholesale as needed. Prices are not that bad and you know it fits

I found this thread as my tweeter has also failed in my 1994 W463.

What did you end up doing about it?

I'm thinking of going to a car audio place and asking for suggestions as to what after-market units would fit.

I haven't fixed it yet. I think replacing the tweeter with any common tweeter will fix it. For the sake of balance, I'd replace both sides.

The real trick is getting the correct crossover between the kick panel speaker and the tweeter. I've been wondering if an easy way of solving both problems is to take apart one of the 4x6 plate speakers, they come complete with new midrange speaker, tweeter and a crossover, all tuned to be compatible. A bit of Dremel surgery and you have two speakers that work well together.

I'm also thinking of replacing my current tape-only Mercedes-Benz Special head unit with a Bluetooth and iPod compatible unit as we are going to be using the car quite a bit more than previously.

We use Google Maps on our iPhones for navigation so it would be handy to have it coming through the speakers as it does on our other car.

This seems a good place to start.

The current MB unit sounds surprisingly good considering how noisy the car is (diesel).

Other issues: [a] the volume knob sometimes goes louder/ quieter when I turn it to do the opposite.
[b] both speaker grille covers in the back doors are broken (kids pushing the doors open with their feet). A0008202812

Does anyone have a good replacement or is OEM the best? I checked and it’s $145 per speaker for the front dash!

I bought two of these:

https://www.parts-express.com/dayton-au ... m--290-204

They give the same sound as the original, if not better. They are slightly smaller and so need to be glued into the original hole. Transfer the wire harness complete with the blocking capacitor from the old speakers.

Totally satisfied with the result.
