Tires and wheels...and hitch options

My G500 came with 18" Geolander tires mounted on MB wheels.

I need to buy a set of tires and wheels for offroading (yes, I want to run two sets of wheels/tires using the stock set for the pavement). I assume I should go with 16" wheels but what brand and offset do I need to run so I don't have any issues with the speedo, etc?

Also, I know about the M-B hitch: http://tinyurl.com/brne85 and http://fourbyfourclub.com/W463Accessories/W463Hitch.htm

But what about a more "conventional" and much less expensive hitch like this one?

Anyone running one like this? This is commonly used on many different vehicles; is this a viable option on the G considering offroad use?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Atik wheels are the 16" wheels of choice for most 463 owners
#8 on my list:
http://www.rubicon-trail.com/G-Class/wheels/start.html

if you want OEM quality, you will have to pick the MB hitch
plus, it comes with the correct wiring harness, including wiring for a brake controller
you will have a hard time getting into the electronics of the G500 when you buy one of those cheapo hitches and want to "home brew" your own wiring harness.
The old days with 3 wires are long gone

Thanks very much guys. I appreciate your input.

Harald, I appreciate your explanation about the hitch - it makes a lot of sense and I'll go that route.

In regard to the wheels, that's a great Web page, thanks. I like #11 a bit more. The question now is where can I shop for these wheels (do I contact the two parts sites people here have recommended)?

your local MB dealer might help

the 2 parts places mentioned here will definitely help you - and may offer better prices

available at that price from http://www.high-impact.net

The Atik is less expensive from Eurotruck <$400, The one you pictured is much more expensive $550-600, but can sometimes be found for less. My parts guy quoted me $476 a piece for them end of last year, but I'm sure it went up with many of the 2009 parts prices, haven't checked lately.

I can't find the Atik wheel or any other wheel (except one steel wheel type) on Eurotruck Web site. Any chance you can throw me a link to the page?

Thanks

they don't have them on the website, you will need to call and order.

Mr Erik,
Does all your electronics stuff work correctly with the bigger tires ? They look fabulous, by the way, and I would lean towards doing what you did versus plunking down the 2k$ for new wheels....at least in the short term.

Cool plate. ;)

I have to ask was there any loss of power? I live at high altitude and drive over a Mountain Pass everyday, I want bigger meats but I can't afford to lose any power.
