Pro Comp Extreme Tires of Choice for Mercedes Engineers

It took a lot of looking at videos in slow motion, but I finally realized that every 6x6 AMG sent to the press and now every G400/500 4x4 squared is running American tires! Pro-Comp Extremes Wonder how that deal came together?!?!?!?!?

Gotta wonder if the look was more important than the quality of the tire. Marketing decision..?

While it is a very capable vehicle, I just can't love this particular G. It's overdone. Obviously made to be sold to young disgustingly-wealthy princes from a specific group of hot sandy countries...

If it looked more functionally-focussed rather than garish and outrageous, I would be into it. I love the military 6-wheel G's, and if this G had a similar feel to it, I would mud-wrestle my grandmother to own one.

Well on that note..... the military 6x6 versions are fit with whatever the customer wants. Here below you can see different versions with Bridgestone, Goodyear MTR, BFG AT, BFG KM2, etc.....

But I really think there has got to be more to it than just the looks of the tire for Mercedes to establish an entirely new rubber supply contract which is actually a pretty big managerial deal that needs to be worth doing for them to invest the time in. I have a feeling they must have tested different tires on at least the 6x6AMG truck before choosing the Pro Comps.

The Achilles Desert Hawk is very similar especially in the center treads, but actually its a different mold and a harder rubber compound (lasts longer, performs worse), and has different sidewall design

The Achilles have just started to be sold and seen here and there around California where I am, but so far I have not heard anything better than fair reviews except for the guys who go in the sand..... which makes sense since its "Desert Hawk" title would indeed speak to that type of application making sense.

Anyways, if anybody knows how this connection between Pro Comp and Mercedes or Magna came together... do tell

At $409 a piece they must be pretty good stuff??? And for Mercedes to go to Compton ?? Maybe a connection between MB R&D in Long Beach (this office does all Death Valley testing) and Pro Comp since they are 10 minutes away?

curious!?!?!?!?

I think we all understand that the tire needs to work to be chosen. However, you don't see heavy duty use vehicle fleets running these Pro Comps very often. Maybe because Pro Comp can't meet the volume requirements...? Or maybe because they don't meet the quality requirements. We may never know.

What I do know is, Pro Comp is not a top tier tire manufacturer. Therefore it is surprising to see them on a vehicle like this, from Mercedes. So what's the differentiator? Why would they not go with a Michelin, BFG, Goodyear, or Bridgestone? They had to look right for the intended customer base, I'm sure. Something wild looking to go on a wild truck. I am willing to bet it was an aspect of their decision on which tire to use. They probably work well enough, and don't need to be made with the quality needed for high speed high heat use. They need the tread to grip and durable enough to last in the rough. Pro Comp may be a great choice in that regard. I don't like em, personally.

I would much rather have seen a 6x6 G with the aura of a mil spec vehicle. That has been one of the major attracting features of G's for years. Not this gaudy bullshit.
