There may be differences between the plastic tanks. So make your own measurements. My tank doesn't have the left side fittings for a saddle. So that is one difference.

The only real way to tell is to drive until the light goes on and the suck the rest out through the fuel line. Perhaps setting the vehicle to a 15-20 degree tilt beforehand to give a margin of safety. Restarting a dry diesel is no fun, especially so for the newer ones like mine that don't have a hand operated primer.

I hit the bottom of my tank this afternoon. I actually coasted into the gas station and the engine died as I rolled up to the pump. Classic move. 25.820 US Gallons is what my 3 tanks will fit, more or less exactly since I ran it try. The range on my last fill up was 358.7 miles but I only got a measly 14 mpg.

AlanMcR wrote:Metal or plastic tank? The plastic tank with the diesel sender has at least 5 usable gallons in it when the light goes on. I routinely drive 100 miles with the light on, and have hit 130 miles (@20-22mpg). A steep side tilt will slosh the fuel away from the intake sock, so some care is required.

I'm wondering if my MPG reading is low because I have 33" tires and the original speedo (32 years old) which hasn't been calibrated for the tires?

Add 10% to you MPG for the larger tires.

If you test it with a GPS that should be about what you are off.

Let us know.

Thanks.

Ok. Thanks! At 10% adjustment my fuel economy is ranging from 15.4 - 18.8 MPG.

I drove a 463 SWB om606a the last 2 weeks and got about 13.3L/100km. Lots of highway driving at 130-150 KPH. It seemed to do better on the side roads when I was not pushing it as much.

The best I ever got in that truck was about 19MPG, so that sounds about right.

If you drive a G500 like a 300GD, you will get 14.7-15.5 MPG pretty easily. The hard thing is to drive a performance car like an economy car.

I am driving my 300gd like a performance car, not like a economic car
