Metal or plastic tank? The plastic tank with the diesel sender has at least 5 usable gallons in it when the light goes on. I routinely drive 100 miles with the light on, and have hit 130 miles (@20-22mpg). A steep side tilt will slosh the fuel away from the intake sock, so some care is required.
