If you haven't done auto glass before it would be best to go to any glass shop and let them handle it and watch.

Alright, so my 280GE's windshield is out. Cleaned up the very minimal cowling corrosion, applied POR15, fresh primer, paint, etc. Ready to install the brand new 460 windshield seal and glass.

There is a nice auto glass shop near me with a couple old experienced guys running it and doing the work. Just the kind of shop I like. These guys say I should not use any sealant at all. Something about going off road, allowing the glass and body to move independently or something....

I dunno. Your thoughts, guys?

Don't 463's use sealant, either between the body and seal, or between the seal and glass, or both? Is this not appropriate for 460's?

Also, they told me that if I do choose to use a sealant, I should use the dark grey 3M sealant, not the black sealant, for this application. Correct?

As I understand it, the purpose of the W463 windshield sealant is to keep the forces of the expanding airbag focused on the passenger. Without it, the airbag blows the windshield out first. Charming, eh?

I guess I'm a risk-taker.

No sealant in my W460. And no leaks!

I opted to DIY. A 12' piece of 3/8" diameter nylon rope and about 15 minutes got it fully installed. These have got to be the easiest windshields in the world to install. Flat glass and no lock-strip just makes it a breeze - same as a bus. Start at the bottom, then evenly up both sides, finishing at the top-center (working from the inside of course). Google a video tutorial if you need to.

Interesting. Hadn't thought of that.

Definitely going DIY. I can't bear to pay someone to work on my vehicles for me unless absolutely necessary.

Just use the sealant. Sure, old school is cool but it never hurts to add more. Have a good reputable glass shop do it.

Anyone know the factory part number for a 460 windshield?

I'm guessing Safelite etc do not have a windshield for our trucks..?
