The 463 side bumper trim is easily removed as it is attached with double stick adhesive emblem tape. It is a bit of a bear removing all of the residual adhesive and foam that has been on there since 1998. It cleaned up okay with some elbow grease and goof off. Some of the holes were blocked off inside the panel by the sound deadening sheeting used in the 463 model. This is easily opened up with a philips screwdriver or sharp plastic probe. The screw receiver inserts that fit in the holes are the same that are used as the rocker pad and fender flare nutserts.
Here are some reposts of the dirty results of trim removal and cleaup. There is a thin piece of masking tape under the far rear trim as well as a groove there. All the other panels are flat with holes and no groove.

The old 463 trim is an extruded plastic tube. When in the hot sun it can become pretty soft. After 2001, MB began adding a decorative adhesive trim strip in the groove of this waist trim. This added some stiffness, otherwise they were the same with a bit more of a fancy look. This set came off of my truck and went to a forum member in the SE USA.

Here are pictures of the bare 461 and 463 bodies before heading over to the paint shop. You can only tell the difference by the side mirror mount holes. Same bones, so to speak...
I took these pictures on a factory tour in 2009.

The 460/461 waist trim is solid rubber with a reinforcing metal strip cast into it. It feels and behaves as a much more substantial part. Much like the difference in the 2 types of 460 headlight surround. The rocker protection pad on the 460 used to be made of solid rubber, the same as the waist trim, but is now only available as the pastic extrusion with a flap to cover the screws.

The 461 side trim went on super easy and looks great. It was a relief that there was no wind noise from the holes when travelling over 95 MPH, I never was able to test that on my old 300GD. I used a stainless black anodized #8 5/8 phillips screw off of Amazon.com for mounting to the body. The standard screw from MB is 4.2x16mm, just about the exact same size. The new 461 uses a trim plug for the holes, part number A0029971486. I haven't seen any of our local G-wagen vendors selling it and I declined to use it as I was concerned about moisture becoming trapped behind the plug, and promoting rust formation of the mild steel insert in the waist trim.

Just got a 100 pack of these though

And a picture of the new trim installed.

I was able to compare the new 461 waist trim with some original 460 trim yesterday. The original 460 trim is a firm foam like rubber like the headlight surrounds. This new trim is the same profile, but solid rubber. Both have the metal insert for stiffening and use the same hole spacing.

This is the first time I see that someone put on 463 trims from 460/1. I like this!
