Puch was never a luxury marquee as Mercedes branded itself. Various bicycles and mopeds only do so much for brand value. Utilitarian cool maybe, luxury status symbol - no.
I live in Central Europe and I bought a Puch because back in the 90s and early 00s owning a Mercedes G usually meant that You belong to organised crime. The cars are 99,99% the same, only differences being the VIN (from 1981) starting with VAG instead of WDB and having 79 or X9 control digits instead of just 7 or X and the badges. In fact the Puch company is quite popular for example in Austria and it´s not so uncommon that people change badges also on newer luxury Gs from MB to Puch.
