An interesting note from the seller:

Diesel vehicles older than 1998 and under 14,000 pounds are exempt from California emissions requirements.

I’m not sure how true this is, but if it is, it would suggest that registering the car in California shouldn’t be too tough. However, if that’s the case, how come the G is still registered in Montana?

They don’t need bi- annual smog testing, but they do need to be CARB certified at a compliance lab at a cost of roughly $10k and the lab might have the G for up to 6 months.

That makes sense. I knew it wouldn’t be as straight forward as the seller is making it seem.

Of course a few older Gs floating around might have already been been made CARB compliant, these should have a sticker somewhere that looks like this;

I bought a grey market 1984 Mercedes 500SEC coupe in New Mexico 22 years ago (my second car!), it was first imported to California, and had the Sticker in its door jam so registering it in CA again after a few decades out of state was possible.

I'm really surprised for these prices. This G is the twin of mine. In 2017 I spent 7k euro for her including new tyres and 175k kilometers. Here in Italy, Gwagen were really cheap until 2 years ago; now prices are growing up but not like in USA. For the same truck of the auction you can spend not over 15k euro. Consider that rear seats are missing because in 90' was possible, reducing the number of seats, to modify the G wagen from car to truck and save a lot of money of taxes. But now it is not possible to covert the truck to car again. For this reason we are exporting these car with 0 euro value in USA. In Italy are only good for spare parts especially because they are Euro 0 class emission.
