I'll try and take a pic of the Europa "frame modification" sometime this week or early next week. I expect you guys will be surprised at the extent of the modifications required.

Yes, the frame modification is a joke. First time I noticed it I was quite puzzled, it seems out of place. I bet it helped give them import exclusivity though. I wonder if DOT, or whoever, would want it done to the models that Europa had it modified that way for crash testing.

Trailer hitch to protect the fuel tank? ;) (that's a joke, it was the Jeep modification needed for rear crash I think)

It was a simple section of angle iron welded along the front face of the leading cross tube. It does nothing structurally. It's only purpose was to create an exclusive "fix" that had to get included in other vehicles in order to meet the type approval.

Pretty close. As I understand it, the front cross tube angle iron was the attachment point for the crash test tow cable. Because the G passed the test with it welded to the cross member, it became an required element of the federalize G, that's it.

So that begs the question, did MBUSA do additional crash testing for the '02 MBUSA G's or did they ride on the coat heels of Europa's results? If they did the latter, where's the angle iron?

That's hilarious. I still haven't see the angle iron on mine, this is in front of the axle?

I would assume that MBUSA did their own testing (EPA and safety)- especially since they developed their own evap system that seems superior to the Europa mess at the filler neck area.

MBUSA is just a sales organization. All of the R&D and engineering is done in Graz/Stuttgart
