FYI: 2003 G500 Odo Rollback

I've been watching this 03 G500 currently for auction on copart, odo reads 43,937. Primary damage listed as 'minor dents/scratches'

Did some digging with the VIN (WDCYR49E93X135238) and found the same truck sold for $16.2k back on Nov 22, 2017.. again on copart with minor dings/scratches, but with a few notable differences..

Autocheck shows last odo reading was 88k miles in 2010. So I'm guessing they did a cluster swap and added fake AMG grill and alloys to make it look like a different truck, hoping someone will think they're getting a deal on a low mileage G.

It was my understanding that doing an odo rollback on the modern CANbus MB's is pretty difficult, requiring reprogramming of the ECM? Guess it can't be too difficult

With the developer version of the STAR system I am able to set the odometer on my 1996 (CAN BUS cluster) to any value I want. To be clear, I haven't actually tried to make the change, but the software clearly offers the option. I don't feel like potentially messing up the cluster for an experiment.

It is a Federal felony to "clock" an odometer.
I found out when I bought a 1987 MB 300D turbo with 39,000 miles from a dealer on eBay in 2016. It actually had 156,000 miles which I discovered when I talked with the original owner.
I think a dealer faces some heavy penalties.

In the US it’s more rare ... but in Europe it’s quite foolish to trust the odometer on pretty much anything. So easy to change, I just never believe the numbers anymore. The truck tells the story.
