Dear all,
is it safe to use MB Hypoid Gear Oil MB Part no. A 001 989 17 03 10 for 280GE differential gear?

Thank you very much.

I can't tell from the number what weight the oil is.
A GL5 gear oil that has a 75-90 Weight is right for those diffs.
Many of us use full synthetic gear oil in there rather than standard petroleum based oil. I think full synthetic oils protect the bearings and gears better and will help the components run cooler. Lower friction is good.
I can recommend Redline 75-90w hypoid gear oil for the axles.
Other synthetics like Agip or Amzoil or the synthetic blends would be excellent as well.

The oil that is called for by the book is SAE 90 Hypoid gear oil. The service sheet: 235
Oil technology has changed a lot since the service recommendations were made over 25 years ago.

Dai,
I also want to know whether 280GE diff gears use HDA or EPA hypoid gear oil.

Ok thank you very much for the advice.

I found a link about MB liquid specs sheet:

thank you.

Differentials require EP or extreme pressure oils. Gearboxes that can run single grade, HD, or heavy duty oils do not need the characteristics of the EP oils.
GL 4 oils are HD I think. GL 5 oils are EP.

Where are you located in the world?

Dai,
I live in Indonesia.
HDA is GL5, EP is GL4, isn't it?

I just made some browsing, please find the result in the attachement. But the file in PDF. Where can I send it?

Thank you very much.
