280GE differential ratio increase

Hi,
I want to increase my 280GE differential ratio from 4.88 to 6.2.
But, before deciding to do that I want to know its pro and cons or advantage and disadvantage.

Thank you very much.

Regards,
oiiio

Will you change tire size as well? If not you will have slower crawl speed, more torque at low end, but also lower top speed.

If you do change tire size (larger) you will have closer to stock specs. 6.17 diffs are appropriate for approximately 35" inch tires on a 460.

If you are using larger tires already you will have lost torque at low end and increased your minimum crawl speed, but gained a little top end speed. In this case by switching to 6.17 diffs you will regain much of the designed performance.

What are your current tire sizes?

6.17, any 5 speed gearbox, and 35" tires = G's best overall driveability potentia for superior offroad ability and handling, braking, ride quality...this allows you to crawl fairly slow, but also go 85mph.

My current tire size is 15x31x10.5.
Yes I need the torque, 85 mph max should be enough for me.

Thank all for the sharing and advices.

Mike,

Do you plan on keeping the 31" tires?

Do you only use the truck offroad? It's going to pretty slow off the line with those tires and 6.17 diffs. Tons of torque.

Unless you have the rare 5 speed manual gearbox with 0.83:1 fifth behind your motor I would advise against the 6.17:1 axle ratio. If you have a 4 speed, a set of 5.29 gears would be more suitable for your use.

Having 6.17 and small tires would turn a road car into a tractor, really great for coal mining :!:
