Re: 230GE 5spd vs. 280GE AT

My 280GE with automatic yields 11mpg on road and 6mpg offroad (70 percent low range).

On highways, most 6 percent grades or something close like Donner Pass and Grapevine will require downshift to 3 and revving to 4500rpm to 5000rpm to maintain 60mph or so. Steeper grades (or higher elevations of over 6000 may require 2nd gear and maintaining 40mph at revs mentioned before.

4250rpm is max torque while 5250rpm provides max horsepower.

I have a G500 in my household also, and prefer it on distance trips . The 280ge is just "plain fun to drive" around town and offroad.

This one is currently on EBay. He has all his numbers wrong. The engine is a 3.0L Mercedes Benz and is out of a 300SD. (126 chassis) (ESN 617.951 12) The 5 spd manual came from a swift SUV out of Europe.

It started life as a 280GE.

He is going to send me some engine photos.

Ontum, your rig sounds nice....thanks for the opportunity to drive it.

Otis, too late! Test drove one on Tuesday and fell in love. And, with a 5.0 V8 and some 300hp, it BETTER cruise up any mountain pass going 90!

Desert, grt info, thanks! I could live with that except the 11mpg.... if i'm going to do that, i might as well drive the g500 since it does the same mpg! You said its an auto, right? I don't see what would be funner to drive about that vs. your g500. Seems like it would be the other way around.

Maybe I should have the title 230 vs. 280 vs. 500 (and AT vs. 4spd vs. 5sp).

Dumb question...does the g500 have hi4 and low4 too? or just all wheel drive all the time then the locking front and rear? (i failed to look or ask on tuesday, was just so excited to dive it on the street)!

Ink, interesing ebay find but seems expensive for a non stock vehicle.

I loved everything about it cept i liked how mine looked more rugged :)

Piotr,

all 1990 and later 463 Mercedes G, like the G500, have full time 4WD - per definition they have low range
all 1979 -1990 460 Mercedes G, like your 230GE, have part time 4WD - "part time" because you can use it only part of the time, like when off-road (it can not be used on pavement)

So just by shifting it into D2 or D1 you're getting 4lo? So, its in 4hi the whole time? I'm prolly just confusing myself trying to compare it to my 4runner which (its an AT as well) also has a separate levar for the 4x4 which (like my old G) has a 2hi, 4hi and 4lo. It also has a center diff lock making it all wheel drive (and a rear diff lock but thats neither here nor there for this discussion).

So if I was to compare the two, would the G be like having the 4runner with the center diff locked only? Or, like having the center diff locked AND 4hi shifted into?

On my runner I can shift the tranny into D1, then the 4x4 into 4low and just about crawl (especially with the rear locked). Would the equivelent on the G to this be just simply shifting the tranny into D1?

here is how it works on the G:
http://www.4x4abc.com/jeep101/engage.html

The G does not have D1 or D2 on the transfer case shifter.
S is 2WD (on-road use)
SA is 4WD high (off-road only)
GA is 4WD low (off-road only)

Your 4Runner was a completely different animal. They call their system Multi-Mode. It is full time 4WD, 2WD can be chosen as well, when the center differential is locked in 4Hi it turns into a part time 4WD system (can't be used on pavement), when selecting 4Lo the center differential is automatically locked (part time 4WD).

So, on the 4Runner you have 2WD - full time 4WD (center diff open) - part time 4WD Hi (center diff manually locked) - part time 4WD Lo (center diff automatically locked).

And on the 460 G you have 2WD - part time 4WD Hi - part time 4WD Lo

plus for completeness the 463:
full time 4WD Hi (center diff open) - full time 4WD Lo (center diff open) - part time 4WD Hi (center diff manually locked) - part time 4WD Lo (center diff manually locked)
