W460 Transfer Case

Looking for some details on how the W460 transfer case operates!

Specifically:

- Does it go 2-High, 4-High (center diff unlocked/AWD), 4-High (locked center diff/true 4WD), Neutral (such as when using a PTO winch), and 4-Low (locked center diff) ? Or is the center diff always locked when in 4-High?

- What is the correct shift process when you are shifting the transfer case with an automatic transmission? Do you have to put the transmission into Neutral before you shift the transfer case?

- If the transfer case is synchronized, what's an appropriate speed limit for shifting the transfer case?

Thanks!

I can't answer all of your questions but it goes 2-high, 4-high, 4-high (again), 4-low. The lockers are one rear, and often (not all have it) one front. There is no center diff - the front/rear is locked any time you're in 4wd. I've shifted into/out of 4wd at various speeds under about 45 by dropping the clutch and shifting the TC. I'd assume the auto needs to be in neutral at least between hi/low but don't hold me to that.

Basically, it's awesome.

G,,day . I regularly go between 2H 4H at all speeds , when going from sealed to unsealed surfaces etc.
I just ease of the throttle a bit .

4H to 4L and back . up to about 40 KMH . quickly go from 4th gear to neutral in the automatic , do your change then back into gear .
same procedure up or down .
stationary , you also need to select neutral .

the reason for the two choices of 4H .
so you can quickly and easily change 2H 4H 4H 2H
or when offroad 4H 4L 4L 4H
without a sideways movement of the lever .

cheers,
kerry

just in case you didn't know
the transfer case uses a straight 80 weight gear oil .
not hypoid , because of the synchros .

just FYI there is NO differential inside a VG080 W460 transfer case. Only the All wheel drive VG150 used 1990-onward has a differential inside, and thus the need for a 3rd diff lock. The VG080 is always locked, because there is NO torque split as needed with AWD. This why it will instantly blow up in 4WD SA or G modes on dry pavement at any speed over 15 mph or so once you go around a turn. It will also instantly blow up if you flat tow the car.

Again, I see this over and over, there is NO DIFF in there!
