Mark, it's actually stainless. It's just discolored form it's former life on a mini cooper as an EGR pipe.

I have heard of some kind of chemical reaction with the oil and copper that causes the copper to leech off into the engine with the oil. I don't remember my source it is just rattling around in the old gray matter.

I've also heard this, but in waste vegetable oil kits. My grease car kit has a copper heating element in the aux fuel tank. I was talking to a guy and apparently the copper can have the same effect

Good deal.

I must have searched over 60 cars till I found that air cleaner. Hopefully you came across yours more easily.

I've been actively looking since I started this thread, (Jan 29th). I came close with another can from a Ford Winstar, the Jeep guys were using them. They're plastic and have the inlet and exit opposite each other in line. I tried to make a side inlet, but it looked a little rigged.
The metal can is the way to go. You can weld it, and mount your brackets where you want.

On to the next project!

I used the other air box for 300TD as in the EPC - Need to find out part number. Reason for the choice was price and availability although the air box from 280 CDI or 300 CDI could / may have been an option.
Space is very tight down there and the heat protection sheet needs to be slightly modified with bending and cutting
