W460 Steering Wheel Upgrades

The 1979 and 1980 G's all came with 2-post steering wheels. Starting in 1981 I believe, the steering wheel became the same 4-point wheel used in the W123 at the time.

As such, the interlocking mechanism used by Mercedes-Benz was identical to the mechanisms used in the W124, W201 and other models.

What steering wheels have you guys upgraded to?

I currently have the W123-style 4-post, but am looking to upgrade to a pre-airbag W124 style, ideally finding a non-leather-wrapped wheel like this from a UK W124 (early 1990s):

I used a 123 steering wheel on my 463 to replace stock because the airbag was not hooked up because of aftermarket bumpers and I did not want to risk the bag randomly going off.

The airbag trigger is not in the bumper. Impacts are measured by a module bolted on top of the transmission tunnel, just in front of the shifter. If I recall correctly it takes a 50G acceleration (of that module) to trip the airbag. The system is very unlikely to trip accidentally.

There are a couple different version of the standard W123 wheel --- my '84 280GE came with an enormous one, something like 420mm or 400mm in diameter. Basically straight off of a school bus.

I did some looking around --- there is a relatively common sport package version that was 385mm, on W123's. They are out there, you just have to do some careful searching.

Then there's a pretty rare 365mm version. I found one of those as well, and bought it - but decided it was a little small for my liking. I felt the 385mm suited the truck while being a little more reasonable in size (plus it was new old stock, so it had the "old" patina) --- so I went with that one. Looks exactly the same as my original wheel, just a little smaller and I don't bang my knees on it when I climb up into the driver's seat.

Hello all, if I could ask you gents a related question - I'm a new owner of a 1982 300GD, which has the two post wheel. I need to remove it in order to get into the dash and replace the blower motor. How in the world do you go about that? Every steering wheel I've removed had a cover of some sort that came off to reveal the nut. I can't see how that's possible with this one. Any advice you guys could share would be really appreciated.

you need to remove the emblem out of the 2 spoke steering wheel , be careful that you do not crack it .
