new to g-wagen, looking to buy a cabrio

Hi,
New to G-Wagens, and looking to buy a swb cabrio, but have a few questions.
We live in Santa Fe, N.M., elevation 7,200 ft. This will be my wife's driver, mainly around town.
Any advantage/disadvantage between a turbo diesel vs gas.
Did the cloth top always have a plastic rear window or did the later ones come with glass?
There is a '92 red 350 tdi cabrio on ebay which comes with a removable hardtop vs the softtop. Was this standard or an option.
I've been wrenching on V.W.'s & Porsches as a hobby for a very long time, so will do as much diy work as possible.
Thanks.

Around town at altitude the older turbos have significant take-off lag before having any real power.

...and although there are many treasures on eBay, it is also a well abused hunting ground for unethical sellers. Only purchase with a PPI
