I saw some 1994-1995 G300TD which I’m guessing is the OM606a motor on a website for European car sales. There was one that looked clean with A/C asking 25k eur.

1996 is the first year of the OM606A, I believe. You’re probably seeing G350DTs, which was the OM603A generally prone to have con rod issues.

I think the om606a factory powered G300 1996-2000 is probably the best diesel G. Relatively simple powerful enough and fun to drive, especially the SWB version, which I have recently owned.
The G400 is considered the worst engine ever put in a G.
They used to say the same thing about the 350GD, but eventually it got well sorted and we all know how best to fix a 350GD with bad motor now. Maybe the G400 will be well sorted by enthusiasts before too long.

Just an entertaining idea, as 400 CDI engines (OM628) were problematic on all platforms, to swap long block and turbos from some 420/450 CDI (OM629) model. Even if the oil pan, mounts and accessories are bolt-on, it surely cannot make any sense financially, as there are plenty decent G 400s still around (not all of them are lemons, I know least one case where owner had no noticeable issues over decade for ownership), but it would be 235KW/730Nm of diesel power 8-)
