Hey there, considering a g550 next spring and wanted to learn more from you all. I’m thinking a 2013 or newer.

Is there much benefit to the 2013 and up g550 vs the 2009-12’s?

Yes the 2013 has frame bracket set up for towing. 2009-2012 are not set for towing from the factory.

2013 has the updated interior.

2013+ can only use diff lockers in low range

2015 is the last year of the naturally aspirated big V8, in 2016 they went to a smaller V8 with twin turbo chargers.

I would consider the 2015 to be the best of the new G550s. Naturally aspirated and set up for towing.

I would consider 1998-2000 to be the best 463 of all time, but most are higher mileage and worse for the wear. Naturally aspirated V8, manual transfer case shifter, minimal can-bus, classic interior (down side too), about as capable as a brand new G550 (except no ESP, ETS). Nice cars if you don't mind a project.

Hi - I saw your post. I went with a 2015 G550 instead of a 2016 G550. I bought mine at the same time the 2016's were rolling in... drove both. There was a different feeling between the two engines. I thought the twin Turbo with smaller displacement was going to be a maintenance nightmare. I talked to tech at Mercedes Dealership and they quoted me $10k to replace just one of the turbos. Its hard to replace displacement with turbos without creating more heat, more moving parts etc. Remember those turbos are in the crankcase on the newer engines. Personally for me... it was a no brainer as I plan on keeping this one 20 years!
