0-60 in in Hours

FNG here. Although I can appreciate the newer G Wagen, always had a special interest in the classics. Made an impulse buy yesterday. 1985 280GE. I know absolutely nothing about it except for the fact that I can probably walk faster.

Question (very dumb): Automatic transmission with gears 1 - 4. What is proper shifting procedure with this vehicle? Start and drive 4th gear all the time or start in 1st gear and move up as you accelerate?

Leave in D unless you need some engine braking. Twisty mountain roads are another place where keeping the engine out of higher gears is useful.

A properly running 280GE ought to have a bit of zip to it.

You should be able to drop it into D and drive through all of the gears like any other car. No special technique needed. If it's not doing that, verify that the transmission control linkage is present & attached/adjusted properly. I think there's a vacuum line as well... can anyone clarify - it's been years since I last one.

Just a silly thought but it wouldn't happen to be in low range would it? How much/how fast have you driven it so far?

No "D." It has 1,2,3,4,N,R,P.

Must not be running properly - there is absolutely zero zip in this car. Takes a while to warm up and even then sputters pretty bad. Step on the pedal and it wants to die. Eventually gets past it and then zooms.

Good question, but no. Not in low range. Driven about 2 miles so far.

"4" is equivalent to "D" so just shift it there and leave it.

Yes it sounds like something is wrong with it especially if it sputters like that. Can you post some pictures of your engine bay? Any idea how long it was sitting for? Also 2wd High on your transfer case lever is all the way to the left and back.

I figured "4" would be equivalent to "D" but didn't want to assume and eventually break something. Transmission already has a kick when shifting.

Just parked it at storage for a week as we take a trip but I'll get some engine bay photos when I return.
