Viton is OEM and NBR is corteco?
Is there aftermarket for Viton?

The outer NBR seals have an aftermarket replacement from Corteco. See my pictures.

The inner Viton / flour carbon seals don't have a replacement and the OEM ones are NLA from MB. The outer diameter should be OD=57,15 mm wich is non standard. However OD=58,15mm is a standard dimension with the same ID and width as OEM.

I bought Viton radial seals and removed 0,50 mm of material on the outer perimeter in a lathe. There was enough material to take from. The rest of the dimensions were exactly like OEM. I made some extra ones (two complete sets), but they are sold to G friends now.

You can do this carefully with the seal ring mounted on a large socket using a cordless drill and a piece of emerald paper aswell. :)

The seals in my box were very stiff. I think they age well during 30 years because of the high temperatures that the TC reaches under 4x4 load (>110-120 dgr. C).

I checked the older MB Service Manual for the transfer case, it has different information regarding the heating of the flanges. According to this manual you should heat the flanges to 120 dgr. C, and not more than 240 dgr. Celsius. In that case it will be much easier to get them on without using a press. Just push them onto the shaft until they barely touch the outer seal ring. Let it cool down and tighten the nut to 200Nm.

I followed that procedure from the old manual when replacing 6 bolt flanges for 8 bolt flanges on my spare TC. found that around 165 degr. C (heated with a heat gun and measured with a cheap Chinese IC thermometer) was a sweet spot and the flanges would just slide on...

Good to know. Will try that on my last flange. Rear output flange requires alot of disassembly when pressed on with hydraulic press. To support the shaft.

I guess Gelandes figure of 160 dgr. C from memory was correct aswell.
These flanges needs a bit more heating than the manual says (120 dgr. c) to get fully seated.

should a similar heating state be applied to the flange on the rear of the trans when replacing that?

No. The transmission flange will slide on/off easily.
