what 5 speed box...?

I am gathering a shopping list before i start the restoration of my rusty Kastenwagen.
I have decided to transplant a 605 engine from the W202 250 Turbo diesel. I managed to track down an immaculate 1 owner from new vehicle . Shame to break it really. I now need to source a 5 speed manual box as this car's an auto.

From my research i know the manual version of this car had gearbox nr 717460.
Does anyone know what other 5 speed gearbox type numbers would also fit the bill.
If i have the numbers it would help me search for a suitable low mileage box on the internet.

Many thanks in advance.

Nearly all other aluminum, one piece housing 5 speeds sold by MBZ are weak.

The 717.460 you mention is considered the least weak transmission so I’d find one of them if I were in your shoes.

If perfection was attainable, who would want it?

It runs well now. Just keep the current OM605+722.6 setup.

Will the 717.460 bolt up to a 603?

Yes, it uses dual mass fly wheel tho, which is not ideal for a heavy 4x4 used for remote travel.

There is a single mass FW conversion kit offered by Valeo, for 2.2CDI sprinter.

I hate to repeat myself but 711.117 with a single mass flywheel would be my choice...

Just spitballing here but, what about one of the sprinter transmissions? Don't they have a more robust 5-speed?

Thanks for the replies. Just the sort of input i was seeking. Baddy, can you explain your reasons for the preference for the 717.117 box please.?
Main goal is strength and reliability and simplicity of the conversion.

Thanks
Dave

Simple, it's maybe the toughest MB gearbox ever produced, it was designed as a HD gearbox for MB vans and small van-like trucks. It's dead reliable, it will go for milions of Kms if not damaged by oil starvation.
It's a pretty much a straight in swap, the bellhousing can be changed to fit a number of MB engines . You'd need to adjust the shift linkage, adapt the shifter to a new shift patern and eventualy shorten the driveshaft.
