W461 Cargo Area Wood

Hey Guys,

The thing I said I would do very first when I got my G was change out the pine plywood in the cargo area. Of course now... It is the last thing that has gotten looked at.

Some of it is warped from probably wet coolers and it just kind of ticks me having cheap plywood in the back.

So, what wood would you put in it? I have been looking at different woods, exotic wood, etc. I don't need too much wood and I can do the wood working myself (I have easy templates) so cost isn't so much of a barrier, but should I be looking for a very hard wood? Then it is more difficult to jig saw around, but will probably hold up to cargo better.

For look, I am envisioning a darker wood, but open to ideas and would be cool to see what you guys have done!

This is exactly the same as my truck, but not mine.

I used 3/4” solid oak flooring in the sprinter and love it. I will do the same in the rear of the 463 g at some point. I designed custom sheet metal trim and had it powder coated black to finish the edges. Durable, able to be refinished.

Treated all the wood with Rubio Monocoat.

What about Bamboo flooring? Ask this question via google:
Is bamboo flooring better than hardwood?
It is harder than most hardwoods, which makes it extremely durable. Additionally, bamboo is termite resistant and comes in a huge choice of stains and plank widths. The cost is generally less than traditional hardwood and, like engineered hardwood, bamboo flooring is easy to install for DIYers.
Typically, bamboo in its natural state carries a Janka hardness rating of around 1,300 to 1,400, making it harder than most oak flooring, and comparable to hard maple. ... Carbonized bamboo carries a Janka Hardness rating of around 1,000 to 1,100, which is still considerably harder than some hardwoods.

The reason I would not use bamboo in a vehicle is because it is still mostly resin / glue laminated together and can offgas for a while, and is not easily refinished. If I was going synthetic, and didn’t care about offgas, I would just use an industrial grade plastic or rubber. Another option is marine grade plywood. You can also get it prefinished with a teak top surface which looks nice.

The laminated plywood in my truck now is seperating a little bit I suppose from leaking coolers getting it wet or just time. I really want to stick with a solid slab of wood, but maybe I am wrong.

Really appreciate the suggestions so far!

I understand that the wood looks nice. However from a practical perspective, I'd install something like the industrial flooring found in airports. Non-skid and basically indestructible.

Teak makes a lovely flooring wood that resists almost all negative effects of moisture. Isn't cheap but you don't need a lot of it..

It's vibrant, warm, and ages beautifully when finished well.

you know it's good wood when RR charges $20k extra for it
