For this motor, which is happiest and most efficient between 4000-6000rpm, an overdrive transmission is hardly worth the effort.

Hi Chris,
you are right, i agree with you that M110 mostefficient perfomance is between 4000-6000rpm, but due to the long drive travel that might be a bit annoying , maybe the overdrive on the 5th gear would help ? what do you think ?

and for the auto 4 speed, i have another W460 which works perfectly with the auto 4 speed.

thanks and best regards

I always felt my 280GE had plenty of torque from 1500 rpm. It can do the higher revs as well, great engine altogether.

The original 5 speed on the M110 is Getrag 717.420 (starter on the right). (717.400 is the W123 version, but also fits).
The 717.422 is basicly the same tranny, but then with starter on the left side.

I was looking to install such a 717.420 5 sp in my 280GE to lower the revs when highway driving, but eventually went turbo diesel.

Not sure which one of the later Getrags (717.4xx) have the starter on the right.

hi Bram,,

thanks for your detailed response, on my case i need to keep the 280GE as goining into the option of changing to turbo diesel is not valid for me..

so i will keep searching for the 5 speed manual that can fit without headache and modification to my 280GE engine .

thanks and best regards

In looking into removing the auto trans from my 280GE SWB, I came across this website: https://agens-bv.nl/product-category/uncategorized/ ... trans conversion related for M110 engine. This might be useful for 280GE faithful G owners.

I've been chatting with him about EFI components. I like his tooth wheel, as it is out of the elements and the pick up should not move at all.

Chris, if you are going to change out the motor, make sure to fix it up real nice first.

Hmmmm, something is going down. Random posts like this don't pop up without some underlying meaning.
